Favorite Seed Companies

We're a month and a half into the new year and I'm starting to see my local stores like Lowes, Home Depot, and Menards display their spring planting supplies. Their shelfs are stocked with the typical Ferry Morse and Gurneys seeds. While these options are good and reliable, sometimes they don't have what you're looking for.

Here are my top resources for seeds not found in the big box stores.

  1. TrueLove Seeds- offers unique seeds for flowers, vegetables, and herbs from around the world. Cultivated by more than 50 small scale farmers preserving their culture and traditions.
  2. SeedsNow- great resource for heirloom vegetables. Also a wide variety of herbs and flowers. Their website is well organized too so it's easy to find things.
  3. Territorial Seed Company- also a great resource for heirloom varieties. They also offer a free garden chart that breaks down when to sow seeds, temperature, spacing, harvest time, etc. Would highly recommend if you scratch your head every spring trying to remember when to start planting.
  4. Sheffield's Seed- They have everything for trees, shrubs, vegetables, vines, etc. You name it they probably got it with over 10,000 varieties from all over the world!
  5. North Circle Seedsa MN state local like myself. They have a great mission and vision for providing organic regionally adapted seeds.

While this list is not extensive to all the great businesses providing resources and ecological diversity. They're some of my favorite.

If you have any favorite businesses give them a shout out in the comments below.
